The sun doesn’t even begin to set in the Texas High Plains until after 9:00 PM during the summer months and the heat of the day lingers for hours after that. This is a part of Texas that makes you work for a living, no matter what your calling in life might be. It’s the heart of the old west and even a quiet stroll through the canyons before dark is no walk in the park.
But if you wander a little farther and sweat a little harder you can find yourself surrounded by the simple majesty of the canyon. Alone out here, a sense of solitude and quiet permeates your soul as you gaze across the canyon floor. Watching and waiting for the sun to dip below the canyon rim, it’s easy to understand why the Apache thought this land sacred. For a photographer like me, it’s about as close to heaven as you can get on Earth.
